RETCHING RED:
Scarlet Whore of War: CD

I must admit, I get a huge charge out of hearing a super-fast, aggressive punk rock band fronted by a female vocalist screaming unapologetically about her bloody womb. Vocalist Cinder Block is the best thing about this solid, politically charged collection of music. Her scratchy sing/screaming makes me want to see this band live, like, right now. And even though I’m not an American, I totally appreciated the frustration and anger present in songs like “Blue Kid Trapped in a Red State.” This is the kind of CD that requires a lot of jumping around the room. I did it. You will too. –Jennifer Whiteford (Rodent Popsicle)

RETCHING RED - Scarlet Whore of War CD (Rodent Popsicle) Retching Red are a female-fronted, hardcore-punk band that hail from Oakland, California, which feature Cinder Block from Tilt (on vocals) and Oppressed Logic's Cyco Loco (who also ha s a cool radio show). For their second release (the first being 2004's self-released album Get Your Red Wings), the metallic edge is a lot stronger, but the punk spirit is still huge. A lot of this brings to mind Allergic to Bullshit, Naked Aggression or even (South America) Colombia's, I. R. A. (at least when Monica sings), as it's hardcore, fast and in your face with touches of punkcore and pissed-off femme vocals. This LP is also way more political than the first. The lyrics are well written, and often witty, which always makes for a good read. Fourteen tracks of intelligent, inyaface politipunk for the fist and the mind. Smash it up! (Sept 05, 2006)

RETCHING RED:
Scarlet Whore of War: CD

A follow up to their amazing CD, Get Your Red Wings, Retching Red continue to show that they are pissed. The first time I listened to their debut, I thought the singer sounded like Cinder from Tilt but was way to pissed sounding. I was shocked to see that it was her! Man she sounded venomous. Teamed with Cyco Mike from Oppressed Logic, they banded together to throw down some mean ass shit. On this release, the energy level continues with their brand of fast punk. But they are maturing by writing more interesting songs. Instead of coming balls-out, they bring you up and down and take you for a ride. Cinder sounds as mean as before, but adds more variety in her delivery. The production sounds better than the last time, giving them a more powerful sound. Mike’s bass sound is solid and provides a strong backbone to the music. The drummer and guitarist are different from the last recording. Guitarist Jake seems to have gelled well with the band without making the band sound completely different. New drummer Adam sounds to me like he know how to control the sticks. Worth his weight in gold, he is the final piece that makes the band sound cohesive. I’m really bummed that I missed them on their latest tour. Logistically it didn’t work, but I will try not to miss them the next time around. –Donofthedead (Rodent Popsicle) www.razorcake.org

RETCHING RED-Scarlet Whore Of War (Rodent Popsicle, CD)
The same amount of agitation as on Retching Red’s first album. In case you forgot, the band includes Cinder Block, formerly of Tilt and Cyco Loco (Mike to his friends) from Oppressed Logic. Cinder has malice in her voice, although a bit of the old croon occasionally pops through. Mainly a fast tempo, although “Blue Kid Trapped In A Red State” is somewhat slower and has the classic west coast punk sound. Ms. Block expresses quite a bit of what I feel lately. Speaking as someone who gets tired of whiny kids, “Stop Breeding” has me going “fuck yeah!” “Lying Sacks Of Shit” deals with such vile beings as Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, et al and it’s a favorite expression. Pulverizing. (PO Box 1143, Allston, MA 02134, http://www.rodentpopsicle.com/)

Retching Red Wednesday, August 16, Lion's Lair
By Brandon Daviet
Article Published Aug 10, 2006

There are few bands these days that can claim to be truly hardcore. In an era of post-this, emo and screamo that -- not to mention the gaggle of other offshoot styles -- there's a scant number of groups who genuinely understand the origins and embody the simplistic essence of hardcore. Retching Red is one exception. Led by a female vocalist named Cinder Block who's capable of tearing shit up with the best of her male counterparts, the Bay Area quartet's relentless, in-your-face style and attitude is a bona fide throwback to the music and ethos of such heralded '80s icons as D.R.I. and Suicidal Tendencies. Red's latest release, Scarlet Whore of a War, is a 24-minute blast of mosh-pit-inducing songs filled with biting social and political commentary. It's a red-letter day for those who thought they didn't make 'em like they used to.

Show Review: Retching Red - Star Bar in Atlanta GA 7/22/06

Well, I have been promoting the greatness of Retching Red’s “Scarlet Whore Of War” Lp for a few months now and was truly excited that they were playing the ATL. My recent mishaps almost caused me to miss this but I was determined to go. Since my van has been overheating and drinking antifreeze, I had to borrow Seyi’s, my adopted daughter, vehicle to drive to Little Five Points where the show was to be. I have been in Atlanta for 4 years now and have never really been to this area, which is like where all “alternative” types hang out. I had a couple of slices at a small pizzeria (pretty good, one of the best I have had in Atlanta thus far) and later a coffee at a café. The sad thing is everything closes around 10pm on a Saturday night, which is typical of this city and is totally lame.

The Star Bar is a popular nightspot in L5P, but since it’s a bar I wasn’t thrilled about going there. The show was supposed to start around 9:00 pm, though the first band The Loose Skrews, didn’t go on until about 10:30 p,m. I really wish I brought my camera because I’m not sure I can describe this band’s performance accurately. They are one of the local “get drunk and party” bands of the area. The singer looked like a chubbier version of GG Allin, with tattoos all over, a cut off jean jacket and leather sleeves with spikes. What was humorous was the theatrics, complete with many cans of beer consumed during the set. In mid set, he put on a football helmet with spikes on the top and slammed a beer can on them and beer started spraying. Practically all the songs were about drinking like “Let’s get drunk”. I’m still reeling from this. Good lord…

After breathing smokestacks worth of second hand poison, I decided I needed some air. I went outside and when to Mike & Cinder Block of Retching Red and introduced myself. We talked for a bit about the place and how some kids couldn’t get in because they were not 21. They were not happy about it at all. Also, something happened with Cinder and the club management before hand so she was pissed about that too.

Finally, Retching Red gets up to play and after Cinder cleared off the stage of the empty beer cans with her feet and proceeded to blast into a very great set of their songs. Great moments included this quote after Cinder picked up an empty beer can, “Hey Fuck Pabst Blue Ribbon…Heinkein!” The very drunk crowd, “Yah!” “Wait A second…I don’t drink so Fuck Heinkein!” Crowd “Yah!. Before they broke into “Smoke Yourself Sick!” she bummed a cigarette of a guy in the front. During the song, she’s blowing the smoke out and after the song was done flicked it hard lit into this guy’s chest. Cinder Block has a way of making fun of the crowd and having them oblivious to it.

The band was white hot, every band member giving 110%. Then when the set was over, the dude who was watching their t-shirt table (I found out later his name was Eli, also in a great band called Second Opinion) ran up and grabbed another bass and Mike picked up a microphone. I was like, “What the hell is going on now?” They then went into a few songs of fast thrash, which I was to find out later that was Oppressed Logic. Holy crap, they were great. Mike owned that small stage, one of the best hardcore frontmen I have had the pleasure of observing. He also grabbed another microphone and in a two fisted action finished of the set. What a unexpected added bonus!

After this, I talked to Mike a bit while he sold some stuff and then I had to get out of that place. Ran into Eli outside and we talked a little about the scenes we are involved in. What a great bunch of people and I’m just sad more people didn’t get to see them. I hope I never have to go back to L5P for any show again, esp. ones at crappy smoky bars.

Below is a listing of the remainder of The Retching Red tour…if you are nearby to any of these places it’ll be totally worth your time to go. I haven’t felt this good about a show in a long while.

Get You Red Wings/Scarlet Whore Of War

Holy shit both of these albums run you over like a train on meth, fucking excellent, fast, technical, and especially thrashy. Fronted by Cinder Block (formerly of Tilt), very aggressive, very fast vocals to go along with the speedy tunes. Both of these albums are amazing, very worth owning. I really like Battery Acid, West Bay Fuck Off!, & Bullshit Repellent from "Get Your Red Wings." From "Scarlet Whore Of War" I especially like the title track, Leviathan and Bludgeoner. Also, Stop Breeding explains what me & a lot of other people having been screaming for a long time, stupid people need to stop bringing kids into this world.
"Put a condom on your dick/Take a pill you idiot." Retching Red are a very explosive punk band that will tear you limb from limb if you get in the way. Pick both of these CD's up and get ready cause they are plowing through about 45 towns running a muck, so if you're anywhere close don't be a fool and miss them.

RETCHING RED- Scarlet Whore of War

Here’s another great punk/hardcore record coming your way from Retching Red. This disc just doesn’t let up with the music, 14 tracks in all. Practically every song is a million miles a hour hardcore. The musicianship is solid and tight, Cinder Block’s snotty (I mean really snotty!) vocals crank & the recording is perfect. Lyrically, a political & personal style throughout. The cover is well done, warheads will not like it. I’ll be jamming this one a lot and will do my best to see them when they play Atlanta in July.

This is female-fronted hardcore at breakneck speed that instantly knocked my dick in the dirt. Awesome. I didn’t know what to expect from the cover: a supine girl with a devil head in her crotch puking out blood, but this rips and tears like an epesiotomy. Take the lyrics from the first track: “I’m pissing battery acid / that’s the kind of bitch I am / Mother Nature made a biohazard alien / strap you down to the floor / straddle your fucking head / gonna let it flow / you’re gonna wish you were dead / I’ll make you look like you really are / a fiend reborn / twisted and deformed.” Imagine that coming at you twenty words per second with a level of rage not just impressive for girl, but impressive period. - BL

EXCERPT  FROM SHOW REVIEW BY DAVE NEGATIVE

THE TOMBSTONES, DR. KNOW, RETCHING RED, STIGMA 13, SIK LUV!!! @ KIMO'S UPSTAIRS

This show was almost shut down before it started when one of the venue's second story fire exits/escapes became jammed shut after almost collapsing onto the sidewalk below. According to the cops, who showed up less than a half an hour after it happened, they were "just passing by when we noticed it." Riiight. More like some yuppie carpetbagger called the station from his or her newly renovated loft across the street and snitched. Luckily Eliot and Gino, who, as Pull The Pin Productions, booked the bands, were able to straighten things out.

I hardly ever get a chance to see Cinder "Block" outside of shows anymore. So it was nice to be able to talk with her a bit before Retching Red, her mid-80's style hardcore punk/thrash combo with Mike "Cyco Loco" Avilez of Oppressed Logic on bass, Jake "The Kid" Dudley on lead guitar, and Adam Grant on drums (Jake and Adam replacing Joe "Fucko" and "Crash" Diaz respectively), took the stage. Although mentioning to me that the M.S. she was diagnosed with a few years back had been acting up it didn't seem to hinder her performance in the least as she ran amuck from one end of the club to the other kicking over tables and throwing barstools while belting out "Bullshit Repellent," "Day 3 (No Dirty Water)," "Rooster," "Disowned," and "West Bay Fuck Off!" from Get Your Red Wings in a decidedly non-melodic feral rasp. Cyco Loco followed suit for their cover of Agression's "Insomnia" by charging into the audience with his bass flailing hard enough to draw blood when it hit someone in the face. Cracking a guilty grin, he told whoever it was "Sorry. I'll buy you a beer later or something." More problems with the mics took the steam out of their set near the end but Cinder's impromptu a capella rendition of Loretta Lynn's "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind)" kept us entertained while they were fixed.

One of the East Bay's best new punk-fucking-rock bands, Retching Red is Black Flag meets Cinder Block from Tilt. Think Cinder can just sing sweet pop-punk? Think again and hear her rip it up with her band mates from Oppressed Logic, Strychnine, Troublemaker, and a ton of Oakland punk bands! Lyrically, she's just as well-spoken as ever, although she's generally more pissed off and/or explicit this time around. Here's a hint- the red wings the title refers to are neither a brand of sneakers nor a professional hockey team! Brand New on their own label!

AMP MAGAZINE MARCH 2005

RETCHING RED-Get Your Red Wings (Bleeding Bitch, CD)
Something has REALLY gotten into former Tilt vocalist Cinder Block. Her vocals on this album are filled with boiling over rage and a rasp that cuts like a machete. On “Rooster,” she laments about people raising chickens in her neighborhood and hisses “I’m gonna kill your fucking rooster/I’m going to rip its fucking head off.” I imagine PETA might have issues with such a stance but she sounds as if she’d rip ANYONE’S head off if they dared cross her. Musically, it’s a lot more exciting than anything Tilt ever did, as well. Her bandmates have done time in such bands as Oppressed Logic, Naked Aggression and Strychnine and create some fast, raging hardcore punk that seldom lets up. A pulverizing debut.

". . .fast music, sweat, blood and beer. Short blasts of energy and aggression to make everybody happy."

Retching Red
"Get Your Red Wings!"
I just woke up from being unconscious for a few hours. At the time the first Retching Red song set in I got hit in the head and dreamt of an amazing punkrock show. I knew it was 2005, but the band playing was just a reincarnation of one of the amazing 80’s punk bands. A DRI, Discharge, DOA kind of band blasting its way through amazing songs, one tiny singer on stage reminding me of Cinder of Tilt, one of the best punkrock bands if you’d ask my opinion. Why should you ask? This is my dream so I can say so. Anyway, fast music, sweat, blood and beer. Short blasts of energy and aggression to make everybody happy. I have to say this is a dream, as I never actually heard this record I think, and I'm pretty sure it can't be that good. Or can it? Still I'm waking up smelling of beer and cigarettes every time “Get Your Red Wings” ends.

"Retching Red in the space of about a half-hour has made a fan out of me."

NeuFutur.com January 2005

Retching Red "Get Your Red Wings!" Snotty, loud pseudo-crust punk from California. How could one go wrong? With the first track 'Battery Acid" barely cracking one minute, immediately people have to think of M.O.D. and all those thrash-punk bands from the late eighties. Every single lyric is screamed out, the music itself faster than shit, and the mastering surprisingly solid for a band of this type. Each track is fast, unrelenting, simplistic and yet catchy as hell. The guitar lines are sloppy and the bass sputters through at the most opportune of times. Retching Red is thus more of an entity rather than its four constituent members; even during the beginning bass solo of a track like 'Day 3" you can hear Cyco Loco waiting for the rest of the band to kick in. Retching Red may be the masters of 1:30-length songs, but as evidenced by the aforementioned 'Day 3", the band just needs to continually change subject matter, topic, and overall sound to maintain their freshness. What is most exciting for me to hear from Retching Red is the aforementioned connection to MOD, which were one of my favorite outfits of the eighties. Retching Red is reminiscent in the way that Cinder Block half-sings, half-shouts eir vocals and Cory tears up each and every track with riffs that would seem to be more in place in a Venom than a punk album (but still makes it work, keeping up the energy throughout the disc).

However, the climax of the disc comes with the insane, sick guitar solo during 'Insomnia", an Agression cover. Can't say that I am familiar with Agression, but if I hadn't looked at the lyrics sheet during the track, I would have assumed it was just another impressive Retching Red song. There is no slacking off on 'Get Your Red Wings!"; rather, the later tracks (like 'Little Loomers") may even be more intense than its earlier-disc relatives. Spinning the disc to the end with a Gits cover (Spear & Magic Helmet), Retching Red in the space of about a half-hour has made a fan out of me. The whole red-period connection may be done to death on this disc, but I'm also wondering if they aren't talking about the copious amounts of blood that just have to be shed in the pit if their live sound is anywhere near what can be found on 'Get Your Red Wings!".

"The production is laid out excellently and with the highest penetrating power,

Ox-Fanzine (Germany)  Feb. 2005

What ever happened to Tilt? Haven't heard anything from Cinder Block and co. in a long time.
Well punk, the waiting is over. Of course RETCHING RED is not Tilt, but Cinder is singing here and that's all good. "Get Your Red Wings" sounds like a hyper-aggressive high speed version of Tilt, Ms. Block yells/screams/sings much hotter like the soul shooting out of a corpse. She's backed up by old friends from the Oakland scene: Cyco Loco from OPPRESSED LOGIC, Joe Fucko from STRYCHNINE and Crash Diaz from TROUBLE MAKER. There are no prisoners taken here, and from the first beat on it's hardcore. You have to wonder why the band had to self-publish the CD – or was that their own free choice? If RETCHING RED turns out to be more than just a short lived side project, I can only hope that a bigger label finds them soon, to give the band the recognition/exposure they deserve. Out of curiosity, what ever happened to Pink & Black?

RETCHING RED accomplish the feat of tying old school hardcore with dirty rock riffs, and if I have to resort to overused terms like "the full board" the term totally applies here. Whoever has a weakness for a rough "girl fronted" band, has to jump at this opportunity, and its no accident that "Spear & Magic Helmet" from GITs is covered here. The production is laid out excellently and with the highest penetrating power, and you have to notice that you're dealing with really outstanding musicians and an experienced shouter/singer. Look at the cover art: a punk chick with her legs spread, a demon's face in her crotch and a mess of blood on the floor. There's a sticker, is there a T-shirt too? I'd be interested to see how far you could get with that at any U.S. High school.
Cinder's lyrics also fit: rough-edged, pissed off, direct. This CD is a must have!!!

Here's the original German text:

RETCHING RED- Get Your Red Wings CD retchingred.com

January 2005
...CHECK OUT OUR JANUARY INTERVIEW WITH THE COMPLETELY AWESOME "RETCHING RED"
(A TOTALLY AWESOME PUNK ROCK SUPERGROUP). ENJOY A. KILLEBREW

INTERVIEW WITH MIKE:

Who is in the band?
Cinder Block from TILT is on vocals, Mike from OPPRESSED LOGIC is on bass, Joe Fucko from STRYCHNINE is on guitar, and Crash from TROUBLE MAKER is on drums.

How long have you guys been together?
Retching Red formed in late July 2004 and we started playing mass shows since August.

How did you guys meet and what got you started as a band?
We pretty much all knew each other for some time and we wanted to start something fresh to assault the public with.

Do you have any new albums coming out or tours coming up?
Yeah, we just came out with our new self released debut CD titled "Get Your Red Wings". We are really happy with it, it was recorded at Motor Studios in San Francisco and it is intense. We will be touring in Spring of 2005, keep an eye out!!

What are your influences and what are listening to right now?
We're all influenced by the 1980's punk rock bands, as well as early metal acts, the harder, the faster, the angrier, the better. We like a lot of local underground bands as well. The old bands are great, but there are some killer new bands out there, pay attention!!!

Any good show or tour stories?
We played the Thrasher Skate Warehouse in San Francisco with the MURDER JUNKIES, all the bands played about 12 feet high looking over this huge skate ramp, Cinder fell off of it, catching her leg in this window and then falling hard on her back. She didn't miss a word or beat, she then rushed the crowd that were standing on the edge of the ramp and started a pit. I later heard that when she did that some kid said to someone "Fuck this shit, this bitch is crazy, I'm out of here!" Retching Red likes to confront the crowd and give more than just a boring stage show, intense energy is what drives this band. If it scare's you then you are in the wrong scene!

Who's cooler the beatles or elvis?
Elvis, he's dead!!

Any last words?

Retching Red: Draws Blood In Bay Area Punk Scene
by Larry Trujillo

Send This Article to a Friend

Send This Article to a Friend

When the legendary East Bay punk outfit Tilt broke up, it was a sad day for their large fan base. With the recent emergence of Retching Red, fronted by former Tilt singer Cinder, fresh blood has been injected to the Bay Area Punk scene by the convergence of these seasoned veterans.s.

Since the formation of Retching Red, how many of your former Tilt fans have followed you to your new project?
I'm not quite sure. I have had some people come up to me and say they loved Tilt but are totally astounded at the power of Retching Red. This project is way more aggressive and doesn't sound like Tilt at all but they like it anyway. I was actually hoping to piss them off. Then I've had a lot of people tell me they weren't too much into Tilt but they love Retching Red.

What response have you received from your self-released debut CD?
Well, it just came out a few weeks ago but we've already been getting great response. There's a couple of reviews up on our website www.retchingred.com. One of which is from a German 'zine that says "Ms. Block yells/screams/sings much hotter like the soul shooting out of a corpse." I liked that. We've gotten some label interest but it's been fun and empowering to put it out ourselves.

You assembled quite an all-star cast for your band... how did you guys all come together for RR?R?
Fuck if I know. We've all been kicking around the Oakland scene for a while. We're seasoned veterans. I hooked up with Cyco Loco at the Slaughterhouse, a soon to be defunct underground club that is really charged with the chaotic energy that punk used to be. He plays bass for RR but has been singing for the notorious Oppressed Logic for 11 years. Crash plays for Troublemaker and had been in Hot Plate with Cyco. It took a couple of guitar players to realize the awesome rulingness of Joe Fucko (Strychnine), but there you have it.

What is the primary mission for you starting the band? Do you see it as going somewhere far or are you guys doing this for fun?
I'd wanted to start a hardcore band for a longtime. My first band in 1983 wrote simple hard fast tunes and I missed that. I guess I'm a lot more pissed off these days. We haven't really discussed a "mission" per say. For me personally I just have a lot of lashing out I feel I need to do. I'm really getting off on getting in people's faces at shows. It bores the fuck out of me to stand onstage and sing pretty. Fuck that. I'm over it. For all my success I've been kicked around twice as hard. I guess I'm in a self destructive mode and I'm going to take some of you motherfuckers with me. As far as "career-wise" I think we've all proven that we're lifers. We will forge ahead regardless of what happens because it's in our fucking blood!

Is your crowd mainly an all-ages crowd or do you have a lot of 21 & over fans as well?l?
As usual, a lot of kids. They know what I'm talking about when I scream shit like "Why don't you just fucking kill me!" I think they are tired of that phony punk poseur crap on MTV. It might as well be disco for all it has to do with the realness of the sweaty, ugly, injured yet burning vitality that exists in the underground punk scene today. Yeah, it's still there!

What plans do you have for 2005? Tours? More recording?
Yeah, yeah and yeah. We are getting so many offers for shows and tours it's amazing. We've already played a fuck load of shows and put out a CD all in only six months. This is a train wreck that ain't stoppin' for no one!

Any last words for our Bay Area readers?
Don't just stand there, scream with me!

RETCHING RED - Get Your Red Wings CD (Retching Red)

A new female-fronted, hardcore-punk band making its way from Oakland, California and they've only been around for less than a year. One of the few things that holds them apart is an all-veteran cast featuring Cinder Block of Tilt on vocals, plus Cyco Loco of Oppressed Logic, Joe Fucko of Strychnine and Crash Diaz of Trouble Maker. A bit of the record reminds me much of Naked Aggression, Allergic to Bullshit or even (South America) Colombia's, I. R. A., as it's fast paced hardcore, with a punkcore edge and pissed as all femme vocals, which are not sung, but not barked either - they're perfect actually. "Plentiful" can clear a room, except for all bassists who'll want to stick around and watch fire emit from fingertips. The cover, with artwork of a punk chick with a monster pussy bleeding out the bands name in red, might be a bit much for some, but it fits the snotty (or bloody) feel of this disc.

She used to play in that very annoying band Tilt. If you haven’t heard of Tilt, you’re not missing much, although this time around I think they have something here. Retching Red is power packed hardcore punch in the gut with straight forward songs and in-your-face energy and angst. Along with other notoriously famous members from East Bay bands like Oppressed Logic, Strychnine and Trouble Makers, they rage every fucking song at a thousand miles an hour. Songs like “Battery Acid” and “West Bay Fuck Off” bookend this hyperventilating spit fest with grindcore like guitars and suicidal maniac drums. Retching Red will leave you wanting to wipe your mouth off afterwards.

RETCHING RED: Get Your Wings: CD
I
f you have ever put in any time reviewing records and CDs, it can be very trying. After so many years, the act of getting my fat ass in the chair to sit in front of the computer can take days of procrastination. So far, one CD out six, I have liked. I reach into the bag to keep the process going. I put this release into the CD player and my head swings around in an act of whiplash. What is coming out of my speakers? The speed factor is up there, the anger is registering in the red, and it doesn't sound like a sloppy mess. Most songs clock in at under two minutes. I have noticed on the net that this band has had shows with Oppressed Logic, Channel 3, and Dinah Cancer & the Grave Robbers up in Nor Cal. Using female-led bands as reference, the vocalist has characteristics that remind me of Cinder from Tilt (it turns out that it is her), but the music is much faster and aggressive than the mentioned band. You could say that they sound like All or Nothing HC or Naked Aggression but the production is much better and the speed factor takes into account. The cover of "Insomnia" by Agression almost doesn't sound like a cover. They sped that song up and made it their own. I have listened to this on more than one occasion. As cliched as this sounds, this is a kick ass CD! - Donofthedead (Bleeding Bitch)

"I present to you a true punk rock album: “Get Your Red Wings” . . ."

Retching Red: Get Your Red Wings!
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you a true punk rock album: “Get Your Red Wings” by Retching Red. The music is spasmodic, fast, sloppy, and incredibly violent. The front cover is absolutely disgusting (a woman’s reproductive orifice is in the shape of a devil head, which is spewing forth a sea of blood that spells out the band’s name). And the album artwork is done up completely in red, white, & black, a very dastardly combo. Anyways, these guys basically sound like a cross between Minor Threat, Black Flag, Accused, and Babes in Toyland. The former may seem out of place, but Kat Bjelland’s screeching wail/ scream is about as close as I can come to describing the sound of the female vocalist for these guys. Speaking of the vocalist, longtime punk fans will recognize her as Cinder, from Tilt; she sounds a lot more aggressive and angry than in the past though. The band actually features an all-star cast of sorts: Mike from Oppressed Logic plays bass, Joe Fucko of Strychnine plays guitar, and Crash from Trouble Maker plays drums. The overall sound they create, though, is something quite timeless. If someone had told me that this record was recorded in ’83, I could have easily believed it. The guitars have that crisp, early ‘80’s Minor Threat sound; the bass is really ringy and overdriven, and the drums are really high end heavy, with the hi-hat being the true star. To put it simply, the violence on this album reaffirms to me that early ‘80’s style hardcore is still a burning blaze in the hearts of Retching Red.

"Retching Red are just what the doctor ordered…. straight at you punk rock, perfect."

Organ Art, April 2005

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2
RETCHING RED – Get Your Red Wings
-
Nothing Like the smell of refried speed punk with your morning douse of Napalm. We’re hung over today, me an’ Marcia X took on the forces of Clear Channel and Sharon Osbourne last night and overdosed on their free vodka and Snicker ice cream – Retching Red are just what the doctor ordered…. You know how The Plasmatics were in theory a brilliant band and when you threw on their albums you were just a little disappointed that they never quite pulled it off in a recorded state – well here’s the best Plasmantic wreckord ever flying right at you at a million miles an hour. Now I’m not saying the Retched Red are some kind of clone, I’m just dancing around architecture once more, throwing up a signpost or two and trying to use mere words to explain music – if you like your street punk and you like your Plasmatics, Tilt (this is Cinder Block’s old band) and your razor sharp old school hardcore punk rock riffage and a thousand classic Cromags/Circle Jerks/DRI/Discharge moments then the Bay Area’s Retching Red got it just right Cinder half sings and half screams, the band relentlessly rip it up, rip roosters up, rip everything up – hey look, it’s just straight at you punk rock, perfect.

AMP MAGAZINE APRIL 2005

RETCHING RED
“Get Your Red Wings” CD
Brand new project from a group of bay area favorites led by none other than CINDER of TILT. This new project is very different, much more hardcore punk rock. A little bird told me that she’s always wanted to do something like NAKED AGGRESSION, and it’s good to see her still rocking out. I can’t help but be partial to TILT as they are one of my favorites, but this new album is sure to bust your ass too. (LD)

". . .you cannot help but give way to the naked fury that Retching Red unleashes on you."

April 2005  www.hussieskunk.com

Retching Red - Get Your Red Wings - 2004 - Bleeding Bitch Records
Retching Red is a new hardcore band out of the East Bay, fronted by Tilt's lead singer Cinder Block. I thought the voice sounded familiar when I first put in the disc! Rounding out the lineup is Cyco Loco on bass, Joe Fucko (who replaced Corey Cutthroat) on guitar and Crash Diaz on the skins. All of the members of this band you should know from all their endeavors around California... But about Retching Red's debut release "Get Your Red Wings", there are eleven tracks on the disc, of which only one breaches the two minute mark. Delivering their version of west coast hardcore punk, with the benefit of an experienced and well-versed front woman, you cannot help but give way to the naked fury that Retching Red unleashes on you. I mean really, how hardcore can it get with a lady up front? Ever been to a Tilt show? Alright then... The band tears through all eleven tracks with glee and abandonment, not giving a shit if you are able to hold on or not. This is fast, aggressive and an absolute torrent of noise that is a welcome addition to the solid hardcore punk sound...especially since it comes from the west coast as opposed to the east. The band even covers songs by the Gits and Aggression on here...incredible! "Get Your Red Wings" is an blazing hot injection of life into the west coast hardcore scene, something you mohawks need! -MG
